Fashion Sewing Camp with Jennifer Serr
In these Camps for children, ages 8 and up, we embrace the exciting world of fashion design. Students will cultivate many fashion related design skills including fashion design, sewing and creative thinking. We will explore numerous avenues of inspiration, through illustration, by making design boards and will delve into the technical world of hands-on garment construction with hand and machine sewing. Each day will begin with a short demonstration and practice of a sewing or design technique, followed by work on the sewing project. We will break for lunch and eat on-site, either in our workspace or on the patio outside. The afternoon will be spent sewing and refining our new designing skills. In the afternoon on Friday we will have a fashion show upstairs in the Rhythmix performance room, complete with music, lighting and catwalk. Let's get started and have some fun!
The Sewing Salon
A Fashion Camp for kids is formatted similarly to our other fashion camps, however it is located in San Francisco at The Sewing Workshop. The Sewing Workshop provides machines for each student along with many cutting tables and a great working environment. The space is entirely devoted to sewing and many supplies will be on hand to purchase (thread, tools etc.).
Additionally we will have a full week with resident runway instructor and professional model, Laurie Ann Bishop. She has worked with designers such as Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Isaac Mizrahi in addition to being the full time fit model at Gap Inc. for over 10 years. Her professional experience in the fashion world adds a new depth to our current curriculum and we are excited to have her with us.
Testimonials
“My daughter took a sewing camp from Jennifer at Rhythmix Cultural Works. Two years later she still has her beautiful inspiration collage boards. She had a great time on the runway, modeling her cute little skirt.
It was a very positive experience! Jennifer and her team are lovely people.” - Alana Dill
“Jennifer is a fantastic teacher! My daughter started taking sewing classes with Jennifer in 2007 and in 2011 is still learning something new every session. Jennifer's love of fashion, sewing, and craft all come together in her classes in a way that keeps the girls stimulated, excited, and empowered about their own creativity. I am always amazed at how Jennifer is able to pack so much in on an instructional level, what the girls are able to accomplish, and how they can still have time to have fun doing things like--creating fashion boards, studying and drawing the fashions of well known designers, or staging runway events! I can't recommend her enough--she has been a wonderful creative role model for my daughter.” - Kelley Flynn
