Jennifer graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising with a degree in Fashion Design, in 1990. Her career began with her company Ask-in Designs, during the summer of 1990. During the early 1990's, Ask-in Designs produced a line of hats as well as a small line of clothing. In 1992, Jennifer went to work for Gap Inc., where she spent nearly a decade, as a patternmaker.
Inspired by the clean, modern and elegant designs of Vera Wang and Calvin Klein, Jennifer found herself designing her own wedding gown, in 1998. Eventually she began designing and producing gowns for other people. And that is how Jennifer Serr Custom Bridal Apparel was created.
In addition to almost a lifetime of sewing experience, Jennifer has studied couture sewing techniques with Baltimore Couturier Susan Khalje.
Jennifer works from her home-based design studio in Alameda. |

The design process begins by discussing silouette, special details and any other ideas you may have about your gown. You might want to bring photos of gowns you have tried on or anything else that might be inspirational. Sometimes a special theme or feeling can be incorporated into the design. For one bride, it was important to include part of the tradition of "something old", so she had her grandmother's ribbon sewn into a bow that was placed on the back of her gown.
Choosing Fabric is the next step. You may pick from some of Jennifer's fabric samples or you may go shopping with Jennifer for a very special fabric. Finding a unique fabric can often be very inspiring and fun.
With all of the special elements in mind, Jennifer will sketch a design for you. Once you've decided on design and fabric, your gown will be made up in muslin (cotton) to fit your measurements. After the fit is refined in the muslin sample, your gown will be sewn in the actual fabric and there might be one or two additional fittings before it is finished.
The design and creation of your special gown will take from one to six months, depending on your timeline and the complexity of the gown. |

An average custom designed couture wedding gown costs betweeen $3,000 - $5,000. Pricing is based on the complexity of the gown. Design, fit and construction are all considered. |
